How to Change Your Formation in FPL

Formations in FPL:

Your formation in FPL simply changes based on the players you have selected to start in your lineup for the upcoming Gameweek. All teams must meet FPL’s minimum positional requirements for starting XI’s which is each team must start a minimum of 3 Defenders, 2 Midfielders and 1 Forward.

Therefore, based on those minimum positional requirements, the available formations for FPL managers to use are:

  • 3-4-3
  • 3-5-2
  • 4-3-3
  • 4-4-2
  • 4-5-1
  • 5-3-2
  • 5-2-3
  • 5-4-1

If you want to play any formation, it should be because of the overall strength of your players in each position group and their fixtures in all likelihood. If you wanted to play a 3-4-3 for example, then all you would do is simply select 3 Defenders, 4 Midfielders, and 3 Forwards to start in your lineup. You would therefore be benching 2 of your available 5 Defenders, 1 of your available 5 Midfielders and 2 of your available 3 Forwards. To select which players are in your lineup in this formation, 3-4-3 is the example we’re using here, simply just substitute in and out the players you do and don’t want to start.

How to change your formation in FPL?

Changing your formation in FPL is very simple and does not require a lot from managers. It can all simply be done in the “Pick Team” section, and we will take you through step-by-step how to do just that!

Step 1:

  • Click on the “Pick Team” section once you have logged in to the FPL website.

Step 2:

  • You have your starting XI and your 4 bench players. Your starting lineup will already be set to one of the available formations in FPL based on the players that are currently starting in your lineup. If it is a 4-3-3 just for sake of example, and you would prefer to play a 4-4-2, just substitute out the Forward you do not want starting for the Midfielder you do want starting that week.

  • To substitute a player out, you can either click the yellow circular icon with the green and red arrows of the player you want to sub out and then click the yellow icon of the player you want to sub in. Alternatively, click on the player to bring up their profile, and select “substitute” and then click the yellow icon on the player you want to sub in.

Step 3:

  • Click save your team. Your team and preferred formation will then be saved. You have successfully changed your formation!
