If you love a tough FM challenge, this is for you. We’re going to get as many Yorkshire clubs promoted to the Premier League as possible by managing as many Yorkshire clubs as possible!
If you’re anything like me, you might prefer the squad-building and transfer side of Football Manager over the matchday experience. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no better feeling than winning a cup final. But sometimes the games themselves can feel like a grind, and the real fun comes from building the club up behind the scenes. Or maybe you do enjoy the match side of things, but the game’s started to feel a bit stale and you’re looking for a new way to play. Either way, I’ve been trying a completely different approach lately, and honestly, I’m having the most fun I’ve had with FM in years. So what’s changed about how I’m playing? Let’s dive in.
For my latest save, I set myself a challenge: get as many Yorkshire teams into the Premier League as possible. I started by getting Barnsley promoted, then took Sheffield Wednesday up too. The problem? As soon as I left, both clubs would promptly get relegated. It felt like all my hard work was for nothing. I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but I must either be vastly superior to the AI or my transfers before leaving set them up for failure.
That got me thinking. How could I achieve my Yorkshire takeover dream without spending so much time that it takes a full month just to get through one season? Then it hit me. Why not make myself manager of every Yorkshire team I can and simulate all the matches using the “simulate result” button? Sure, transfer windows would take forever, but that’s my favourite part of Football Manager anyway. Once the season begins, I can let my assistant managers handle the matches and enjoy a completely stress-free campaign. And for the really big games? I can always step in and manage those myself.Since I started playing like this, I’ve been hooked.
To keep things realistic, I only add myself as manager of Yorkshire teams that have sacked their boss. Right now, I’m juggling Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford, and Halifax Town.
Running transfers and staff for three clubs at once is absolute chaos, but it’s been brilliant. Optimising the backroom staff for one team is fun – doing it for three at the same time is next-level. I’ve even been able to strengthen Halifax and Bradford by loaning players between my clubs. My ultimate goal is to turn Yorkshire into a footballing powerhouse, and the only way that happens is if all the teams work together. There’s only been one downside so far. That dreaded day in July when you have to sort out staff contracts. Renewing 50 deals in one go is about as fun as a pre-season friendly in the pouring rain. But the rest of the experience has been so enjoyable, it’s given me a whole new lease of life for FM – especially in a year without a new game to look forward to.
If simulating results isn’t your thing, you could still try this approach and play every match manually. It would just take a heck of a lot longer. So, would you ever play Football Manager like this? Which club are you managing right now? Let me know in the comments!
