Arsenal Team News:

  • Kai Havertz is set to be sidelined for an extended (and currently unconfirmed) period of time with what seems to be a serious knee injury.
  • Eberechi Eze in a shock move spurned Spurs for Arsenal and is having his medical Friday. It is highly unlikely he makes the squad for Leeds, but even if he does, he will not start and probably won’t feature unless Arsenal have a big lead in the second half.
  • Ben White was not spotted in Arsenal’s Wednesday training session and if this is due to a knock or injury. Arteta speaking on Friday said “Christian Norgaard won’t be in the squad. Ben (White), let’s see.” While we learned last season that we shouldn’t really read in to what Arteta says about injuries in press conference’s, Ben White’s outlook for GW2 does not seem particularly positive.
  • Arteta speaking Friday on Jurien Timber’s fitness, revealed “With Jurrien, we have to manage his load because he has been out for a long time again. We have to manage his load and have decided to take his training down.” Not a good sign for his ability to start in GW2 that they had to take his training levels down a notch. Unlikely he starts this game.
  • If neither Timber nor Ben White are fit enough to start, Mosquera would be the likeliest candidate to start at right back given his pace and the fact he is right footed. Calafiori switching sides and having Lewis-Skelly play left-back is another option. Declan Rice could also play right-back maybe and slide Merino into midfield.
  • Martinelli has failed to really make an impact for over a year now, and his Arsenal career may be dwindling out, but for now I still think Arteta will opt for him over Madueke at left-wing. Eze will likely become Arsenal’s starting LW but will need a couple of weeks to acclimate before starting.
  • Calafiori got the nod over Lewis-Skelly in GW1 and I think he does again here in GW2. Calafiori provides better ball progression from deep and is more of an overlapping attacking outlet and more of a threat from crosses/set pieces than MLS and Arteta probably opts for that profile against a Leeds team Arsenal should look to play expressive football against and win the game handily.
  • Gyokeres of course, with Havertz’s injury, starts once again despite a pretty poor display against Man United that highlighted some of his flaws as a player. Arsenal don’t really have any choice but to start and play Gyokeres and hope he adapts to the league quickly.

Leeds Team News:

  • An unchanged starting lineup for Leeds heading into GW2 off the high of a GW1 victory over Everton outside of the injured Ampadu making way for Sean Longstaff. Ampadu has an MCL injury and Farke revealed he is set to be sidelined until after the international break.
  • Piroe vs Nmecha will be one to watch after Nmecha came on and scored Leeds’ winning penalty vs Everton.
  • Stach may move into Amapadu’s role as the deepest midfielder to maximise Longstaff in this XI.
