Liverpool Team News:

  • Slot confirmed Van Dijk is okay after last weeks horror tackle from Anthony Gordon that left visible stud marks down his calf.
  • Connor Bradley trained all week and is fit and ready to start against Arsenal. He made a good cameo off the bench against Newcastle and should start with Szoboszlai moving back into midfield.
  • Alexis Mac Allister also trained the majority of the week and Arne Slot revealed he is also fit and ready to go for Arsenal.
  • I think against an Arsenal team that dominates by being more phyiscal, defensively sound, elite running power all over the pitch and set pieces, Slot will opt to start Szoboszlai over Mac Allister in midfield. Mac Allister coming on around 60 minutes when the game is less intense, to come and run the game from midfield. Could be a key weapon for Liverpool off the bench in this game.
  • Frimpong is set to be sidelined until after the first international break of the season wit ha hamstring injury.
  • Arne Slot did reveal that Joe Gomez “has not had a setback but he was not able to train three days in a row (after Bournemouth). We will see where he is on Monday and if he can start”. He was on the bench against Newcastle but did not feature. Likely the same again for Arsenal.
  • If Szoboszlai were to start at RB, I think it would be Jones who starts alongside Gravenberch. He was good against Newcastle Monday night and brings calm and control of the ball to a Liverpool team that has needed more of it at times through 2 GWs. He is also taller and stronger than Mac Allister which will be needed against Arsenal.
  • Isak and Guehi look to be deals that should be sealed before Sunday’s game but neither will feature in GW3.

Arsenal Team News:

  • Bukayo Saka is set to be out 3-4 weeks with a hamstring injury that he suffered in the 2nd half against Leeds in GW2. A massive blow for the Gunners. Arteta speaking on Friday said “Bukayo is doing better but he is out for a few weeks unfortunately. No surgery. It’s not as bad as the previous one.”
  • Speaking on Odegaard’s injury, Arteta informed the media that “We don’t know yet. He hasn’t trained yet and if he does it will be tomorrow. Let’s see. He is doing everything he can. We are doing everything we can to make him available…There is an injury there but hopefully, if everything goes well, he can cope with it. But we don’t know yet.” Seems like it will be a game time call. Eze would be the likeliest replacement to play in Odegaard’s spot and Martinelli would then start RW.
  • Kai Havertz is set to be sidelined for an extended (and currently unconfirmed) period of time with what seems to be a serious knee injury. Arteta said “I think it will be weeks, but I don’t know how many.”
  • Eze in a shock move spurned Spurs for Arsenal and is has now officially joined Arsenal. He made his first public showing as an Arsenal player at the Emirates against Leeds but was not in the matchday squad.
  • I think there is a good chance Eze starts against Liverpool. Without Saka they need his ball carrying, creative spark, dynamism and long range shooting to replace what Saka provides them in goal threat and chance creation to have a chance against Liverpool at Anfield.
  • Ben White was not in Arsenal’s squad against Leeds. Arteta said Friday speaking on Norgaard and White “We don’t know yet (if they will be available to face Liverpool). Tomorrow we have another day. Let’s see how they evolve and if there is a chance to have them involved in the game.”
  • Timber answered any fitness questions by starting vs Leeds.
  • Calafiori got the nod over Lewis-Skelly in both GW1 and GW2. Calafiori provides better ball progression from deep and is more of an overlapping attacking outlet and a greater threat from crosses/set pieces than MLS. I doubt Arteta would throw Lewis Skelly in for his first start of the season against a Liverpool attack that has scored 7 goals in 2 games against 2 good defensive teams.
